UK Flood Risk As Heavy Rain Continues To Fall by ( Canada )

Flood watches and warnings have been put in place on almost all Scotland's rivers after heavy rain caused rivers to rise to near bursting point.

Householders in northern Britain are being told to brace themselves after the Environment Agency issued 27 flood warnings and 69 flood alerts across the region.

Temporary flood defences were put up following prolonged deluges yesterday, with more heavy rain predicted.

In Cumbria, low-lying areas along the River Eden including Appleby and Carlisle are at risk, while there are also warnings in parts of Yorkshire and Northumberland, including Masham, Ilkley, Wetherby and Falstone.

In Shop, Cumbria, 110mm of rain was recorded yesterday along with wind gusts of 69mph.

Temporary flood defences were put up in Appleby on the River Eden after the downpours, but Environment Agency officials said some properties, roads and land are still at risk.

Flood warnings are also in place in North Wales which recorded the highest rainfall of yesterday - 114mm in Capel Curig, Conwy.
Sky News forecaster Isobel Lang has said more rain is forecast today, "Although thankfully conditions will gradually dry up and brighten up across the north as rain continues to spread further southwards".
Lang said early rain and gusty winds in Scotland, Cumbria, Northumberland and much of Ireland will slowly die away, leaving scattered showers and some sunshine.
"Across the rest of England and Wales it will be a mild but rather blustery and overcast day with outbreaks of rain spreading southeastwards, reaching the southeast this evening.
"Wales, Lancashire and Yorkshire will see heavy rain for several hours - but the rain should ease in intensity this afternoon and clear by evening."
